Paddler's Getaway Weekend in the 1000 Islands...

This fall we're offering a Thousand Islands Guided Tour & Instructional Weekend through a special arrangement with Misty Isles Lodge in the 1000 Islands of Ontario. 
   The weekend will start on the evening of the Autumnal Equinox Friday (9/21) with an informal get-aquainted session and a basic navigational primer and continue on Saturday with a full day
ACA Coastal Kayak Open Water Skills Class
   Sunday's activities will include a guided kayak tour of the 1000 Islands Area - one of the most scenic waterways in North America - with an emphasis on the natural beauty and wildlife of this unique biosphere. Further instruction given during Sunday's tour will include kayak surfing and open water techniques. Details are outlined below....
   If you've paddled before but lack the skills to venture out onto the 'big water' then this is your chance to enjoy a wonderful getaway in one of America's most beautiful recreational playgrounds while gaining new ability and confidence through our expert BCU/ACA certified instructors. Learn why the teaching team of The CRANK has fallen in love with the Thousand Islands and all it has to offer, and come share the experience!

Saturday - On Water Class/ACA Coastal Kayak Open Water Skills

Cost: $150.00
Time: 9am to 5pm
Location: Misty Isles Lodge, Gananoque, Ontario, Canada
Other Info: Class includes gourmet boxed lunch, ratio of 1 instructor to 5 students or less
Prerequisite Experience: Basic Strokes & Rescues Class or Equivalent Experience

Class Description:

   Take your paddling skills to the next level.  Designed specifically for the paddling enthusiast, this class will allow you to refine your current kayak skills while increasing your coastal kayaking paddling and rescue proficiency in the beautiful Thousand Islands, Canada.  Refine your forward stroke for maximum efficiency and effectiveness; while practicing and mastering the J-lean and related maneuvers, and learn “why it is the single most important kayaking skill”.  Increase your speed and competence of self-rescues and rescues of others in open water, while also practicing fundamental navigation both on and off the water.  The day will culminate in a scenic skills development tour as we put our skills to the test and enjoy the challenge of paddling the ever-changing conditions of the historic St. Lawrence Seaway.

Sunday -Guided Tour/ ACA Coastal Kayak Strokes and Maneuvers Refinement

Cost: $125.00 (Class is normally $150.00 - you save $25 by booking both days)
Time: 9am to 4pm
Location: Class will meet at
Misty Isles Lodge
and tour route will be decided pending weather and water conditions. Specific techniques will be taught during the all-day tour of the 1000 Islands as we paddle into appropriate conditions (surfing a kayak, bracing into waves, holding a course in wind, etc.)

Prerequisite Experience: Participation in Saturday's class (9/22)

Class description:
   We will review, practice and work to increase our efficiency, fluidity, and control of strokes, maneuvers, and rescues, while on our guided tour of the beautiful Thousand Islands.  Distance and destination of the day long paddle will be determined by the ability of the class, wind, and weather.  The day will not only include on and off-water practice and discussion, but also video analysis of each individual’s strokes and maneuvers, and analysis of the video. 


Minimal Personal Equipment to Participate in the Courses...

  • Kayak – minimum 12 foot in length.  Properly sized and outfitted with front and rear floatation or bulkheads (hatches)
  • Standard gear and safety equipment – paddles, PFDs, sprayskirts, paddle floats, bilge pumps, stirrup (approximately 12 – 16  foot length of rope – non-abrasive), noseplugs.
  • Deck mounted white light visible 360 degrees – appropriate for paddling at night
  • Water shoes – NO SANDALS ALLOWED
  • Appropriate clothing for paddling in September in the Thousand Islands AND becoming submerged – YOU WILL GET WET!  Minimally – polypropelene or other man-made material pants and shirts; paddling jacket.  PREFERRED  - wetsuit, drysuit, drytop, etc.  Head, hand, and footwear (gloves,hat, skull cap, booties, etc.), fleece or thermal underwear for layering, bathing suit
  • Hydration systems and/or water bottles.
  • Appropriate on-water snacks to sustain energy throughout the day.
  • Bonine, Dramamine or other seasick medication if needed.

Other things you may want...

  • Any personal safety devices and signaling equipment you may have (ie flairs, strobe lights, etc.)
  • Casual clothing for evenings
  • Money for incidentals (eating out, etc)
  • Charts of the Thousand Islands
  • Compass or Navaid
  • Appropriate identification to cross the border into Canada – passports will be required, but due to the backlog in the U.S. State Department, an extension was granted allowing original birth certificates and drivers licenses to be used until the end of September (this is subject to change)  YOU ARE RESPONSBLE FOR VERIFYING WHAT DOCUMENTATION YOU WILL NEED AND PROVIDING IT TO CANADIAN CUSTOMS.
PLEASE – dress appropriately, drink and snack frequently, and take care of yourself as we want to be able to play all day!  Weather can present another issue.  Please remember, rain can lower your body temperature, and also increase your vulnerability to hypothermia, so please bring the appropriate gear.  We will paddle in the rain, and only stop if electrical conditions present themselves or other weather conditions make paddling unsafe.  It is our intention and commitment to provide you with a complete and memorable experience, regardless of weather.
